A couple years ago I would have scoffed at the notion of pixel art being used effectively in a horror game. Such a fool I was! Now that I’ve shit my pants playing Corpse Party and Lone Survivor, I have realized the errors of my ways and greedily await more games in a similar vein. What’s that you say? Catequesis is exactly what I’m looking for?
How right you are! Developers Pakarico Games and Curved Cat Games are bringing us Catequesis, a new survival horror game that looks to be mixing old-school aesthetics with a bevy of influences including Resident Evil, Silent Hill, The Legend of Zelda, and Twin Peaks. Catequesis is the Spanish word for catechesis, the religious schooling that Christians and Catholics go through at a young age. I’m excited to see a game deal with a real-world religion instead of making one up.
The trailer below shows how quickly the game goes from adorable to ahorrorable, hohoho. One minute you’ll see characters with cute little beady eyes, and the next you’re looking at a fleshy, pixellated monstrosity. Everything is looking great so far, so expect to see more coverage on the game leading up to its 2014 release.
