Capcom has been on an absolute roll with Resident Evil 7‘s marketing, let me tell you. From the mystery laden demo to a stream of small snippets of gameplay, Resident Evil 7‘s whole promotional campaign has been reserved, delicate, and most importantly spoiler free. This week they sent us (and dozens of other outlets) a mystery package. Inside was a piece of tech I haven’t owned in over a decade: a simple old VCR. There’s also a personalized message from Beginning Hour’s own Pete on a VHS tape.
Whether you’re OK with games media receiving promo items or not, you have to give it to Capcom for being creative. It’s funny to write this as a 90s kid and call VHS tapes and VCR’s “retro”, but at this point they are. I hope to see the formats effects used well throughout Resident Evil 7. Beginning Hour’s usage was cool if you ignore the logic behind a 2017 TV show still recording on VHS.
If you’re curious, I unboxed the package in the video below. I’ve also edited in Pete’s video. Check it out.
