At a PlayStation Partners event in Japan this week, longtime Capcom veteran and producer of the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 remakes, Yasuhiro Anpo, confirmed that Capcom will continue remaking the Resident Evil series from the ground up, following the successful remakes of RE 2, 3, and 4.
Anpo stated that the success of the already-released remakes keeps them in discussions to continue with this trend. He stated that since he’s a fan of the original games, he’s happy to continue these remakes that let younger generations experience these classic games in a new way.
He also stated that they will be sticking with the RE Engine for the foreseeable future since it’s been so successful when used for many of their recent games and also helps speed up the development time since their teams are already so familiar with developing games in the engine. Anpo stopped short of announcing the next game that gets remade, saying they will reveal which title will get the remake treatment once they’re ready.
There have been tons of fan theories and speculation about which game will get remade next, ranging from those who think they’ll remake the first Resident Evil game again in the RE Engine to those who think they’ll be skipping all the way forward and remaking Resident Evil 5 next. However, the strongest argument is that Resident Evil Zero or CODE: Veronica will be the next title that gets remade since Capcom chronologically skipped both games over in favor of making the Resident Evil 4 remake earlier this year.
Fan-made remakes of the first Resident Evil and CODE: Veronica have both been shut down by Capcom as recently as a year ago, hinting that they may be planning or working on remaking these titles already, but only time will tell which one will come next.
There’s also the discussion of what will be next for the series in general, and whether we’ll see another new title for the series, such as the rumored Resident Evil 9 before we get another remake, but we’ll have to wait for confirmation from Capcom to see what shakes out for us fans of the series.
Stay tuned for further updates or news about the series as they become available, and let us know which game you think should be the next one that gets the remake treatment!
