A recent entry in an artist’s resume hints that Bioshock 4 may be targeting a 2028 release date.
For a long while now, any real news around the more-than-eagerly-awaited successor to the cult-classic Bioshock by 2K has been hard to come by. From rumors of its imminent announcement, which were later confirmed to be in development by Cloud Chamber Studios – a Novato, CA-based 2K studio, to the game possibly being set in the 1960s , to possibly being an open world title, to it maybe featuring a female protagonist in Antarctica, the game’s news-cycle has been nothing short of rumor-city.
Newest speculation has it that Bioshock 4 will be released in 2028. This is according to Mack Sztaba’s Artstation profile. Given Sztaba is the senior concept artist at Cloud Chamber Studios, who were confirmed to be developing the title, his listed credentials for Bioshock 4 actually put this piece of information a good length ahead of its rumor-competiton in the credibility department.
At the risk of making you feel really old right now, this means that Bioshock 4 would be releasing an entire 21 years after the first game, or a still kind of shocking 15 years after 2013’s Bioshock Infinite.
At first glance, it might seem a tad strange to see credits appearing for a game that is only supposed to come out in 5 years’ time. However, when we take into consideration that the game has been announced to be in development in 2019, and put that together with Mack Sztaba’s position as being in charge of concept design, this makes a lot more sense.
Over the past decade, development cycles for games, especially in the AAA section, have skyrocketed, so a 5 year-time-frame from now to release is not that unusual. And, as mentioned, Sztaba’s position as a concept designer would most likely be needed very early on in development, in comparison to other talents who might be brought on board later on in Bioshock 4‘s development.
Until Sztaba, or anyone representatives from 2K or Cloud Chamber Studios confirm anything officially, all of this still has relatively little relevance, though. The date could also just be sort of a placeholder which can be moved back and forth as time and development progresses.
We will certainly keep you updated, should we come across any new information surrounding the title. We certainly would not mind having Bioshock back a bit earlier, either.
