Many of us have stepped into the shoes of a character forced to deal with Lovecraftian horrors that pursue him or her, but today’s game turns the tables around and allows players to become an Old One, a Lovecraftian creature that has just awoken and must now conquer the world.
That Which Sleeps comes to us from King Dinosaur Games, a studio consisting of two veteran designers. This is their first project together and so far That Which Sleeps looks absolutely amazing. The game can be loosely described as a fantasy version of the Total War franchise, but instead of fighting real-time battles and upgrading cities, the player has to direct their small group of agents to spread their influence. Kings and heroes are still around to do a bunch of fighting and pursue ambitions, though, and as the Old One you can choose to avoid them and leave them to bicker among each other or nudge them in the right direction a bit with your agents. King Dinosaur Games is truly striving to create a living world and you get to blend into it and manipulate events from the shadows. If you are careless however, then cunning heroes are sure to find clues leading back to you, which may end rather badly for you and your worshipers.
The game had to go through Kickstarter and Greenlight, like so many other titles, but it seems unlikely that this will be another forgotten indie project that never got funded or greenlit; the game is already approved for a release on Steam and the $12,000 minimum goal for the fundraiser has not only been surpassed, but quadrupled. With a week left on the clock, it seems like That Which Sleeps will meet even more stretch goals than it already has.
