If you’re familiar with the works of Troma (Toxic Avenger, Poultrygeist, Tromeo and Juliet), then you might have a good idea what trash cinema is. These films are trashy by being offensive, disturbing, and in many ways disgusting, yet they gather cult followings due to their comedic value.
Bad Taste is a video game that’s currently up on Steam Greenlight that aims to bring the vibe of trash cinema to games. Starring Spencer Rice and featuring an appearance by Troma founder Lloyd Kaufman, Bad Taste is a game about fast food culture. Genetically modified meat makes its way to major fast food chains and ultimately mutates its consumers into zombies and gains sentience. Players will have to fight mutated food monsters, zombies, and chickens.
Currently, the Steam Greenlight page and listed video previews leave much to be desired; the prototype build looks extremely rough and the concept doesn’t seem to be appealing to some people as they believe Bad Taste to be a form of an anti GM-food statement. But if it’s anything like a Troma film, it won’t exactly be a preachy, self righteous social commentary.
Personally, I’d love to play a Troma-style game. Poultrygeist, also about monstrous food, made me laugh pretty hard. If that’s the style that Bad Taste is hoping to achieve, then I look forward to seeing more of it down the line. I just hope that it makes some strides in improving its visuals and gameplay.
