Nintendo had quite a strong showing at this year’s E3, despite their current platform, the Wii, being for lack of a better word “ignored” for the most part (with Zelda and Kirby serving as the big heavy-hitters for the platform this holiday season). So, that leaves the 3DS and next year’s Wii U. The former is currently struggling on various fronts and the latter is shaping up to be the platform current Wii owners have been asking for, specifically the core audience that Nintendo seems to have pushed aside in favor of the casual market this generation.
That’s where the third parties come in, because we already know Nintendo could deliver when it comes to their first party titles, but if there was one thing lacking from the Wii’s library it’s strong third party support that serves to be more than just shovel-ware and games for the casual gamer. Hell, one need not look further than Nintendo’s E3 2011 presser to see how Nintendo fans will finally get a chance to experience all those third party series that didn’t see a Wii version.
One such third party title is Gearbox’s upcoming Aliens: Colonial Marines. The multi-platform game was shown off in a special highlight reel to complement the Wii U’s reveal, and thus its strong third-party support, but it still hasn’t really been made ‘official’. In regards to this, Gearbox Software’s very own, Brian Cozzens, states:
“Aliens: Colonial Marines on Wii U is not a definite. It’s just something we’re looking into. We want it to happen. We’ve already come up with a ton of gameplay ideas that can specifically use that controller, so we’re really anxious to get the specs to see if that’s something to make happen.”
Let’s hope we do end up getting the game on Wii U, because there’s many creative things the team can pull off with the system’s tablet controller that would definitely add an even greater level of immersion. Fingers crossed!
