The Kickstarter campaign for OZombie isn’t doing too well, 9 days in and the studio has raised only 12% of the minimum $950,000 that they need. Turns out that 30 different tiers for pledges and a mysterious box aren’t enough to draw attention. Perhaps an Alice movie will?
Alice: Madness Returns already had some wonderful animated scenes in it, but we have yet to see an actual movie based on the license. Spicy Horse has now organized a deal with the current owner of the film rights, Collision Entertainment, and they will be allowed to “rent” the rights for $100,000 a year. This has been added as a stretch goal to the Kickstarter campaign for OZombie, meaning the deal will go through if the campaign makes a minimum of $1,050,000 or greater. Alternatively, the rights may be purchased entirely for a total of $500,000, which Spicy Horse plans to do if they raise enough money for it.
Once the rights have been obtained, Spicy Horse intends to publish a number of animated shorts and maybe even a feature film. It’ll be interesting to see if this changes anything for the campaign and, speaking as a fan of the games, I am really excited for these shorts.
