With all the recent Alan Wake news, such as Remedy regaining full publishing rights to the IP, things are looking very good for a future sequel or spin-off title. Consequentially, I suspect that Remedy wants as many people to get their hands on the original game first, which would explain why Alan Wake is free on the Epic Games Store until August 9th. Aside from the platform, this version seems to practically be identical to currently available Steam release, although there doesn’t appear to be any mentioning of the bonus materials and collector’s edition items on the EGS, nor is there any bundle for the spin-off Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, that being said, you definitely can’t beat free.
Like many, I am not a fan of Epic’s strategy of scooping up exclusives as a means of drawing in customers, as opposed to improving their storefront. Given how Remedy’s Control is a timed exclusive for the Epic Games Store, I think it’s safe to presume that a hypothetical Alan Wake 2 would likely have a similar exclusivity deal attached to it. On the bright side, giving away free games instead of restricting access is an infinitely more pro-consumer means of drawing in business, so if you missed the various extreme sales for Alan Wake on Steam, you can get it now literally for free…so do it. Just sign into your old Fortnite account and click the big button that says ‘Free’.
As a side note, For Honor is also available for free on the Epic Games Store in case that interests you.
