Remedy Entertainment recently revealed more details about the PS5 Pro update for their hit game Alan Wake 2, explaining the trade-offs and improvements that come with the new modes.
In a blog post, Remedy Games outlined that the Quality Mode for Alan Wake 2 on PS5 Pro will run at 30 frames per second with ray tracing enabled, providing a higher level of visual fidelity. The output resolution will be 3840 x 2160 (4K), although the display resolution will land at 2176 x 1224. Remedy’s update is unsurprising considering the game’s hefty PC requirements, which recommend an RTX 4080 card to run ray tracing efficiently.
Players looking for a smoother experience won’t miss out, though. Remedy assured fans that the PS5 Pro version will feature significant upgrades in Performance Mode as well. The update promises significantly higher output resolution compared to the base PS5 version, aiming for a native 4K output, while also introducing improvements in stability, fog, volumetric lighting, and shadow accuracy.
The development team explained that they conducted several tests to optimize the game for the PS5 Pro. They experimented with upscaling the 60fps Performance Mode from 1440p to 4K and implemented Sony’s AI-based upscaling method, PSSR. These adjustments improved both image clarity and motion stability.
Remedy pointed out that achieving ray tracing in Alan Wake 2 is quite challenging due to the complex interactions between light, materials, and the game’s detailed environments. These factors make effects like tracking, shading, and de-noising demanding on the hardware.
Alan Wake 2 launched in 2023 and is available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.
