What we want in Dead Island

I know, another Dead Island article. Surprisingly, though, as opposed to other outlets we still haven’t collectively gathered each of our expectations for the upcoming survival-horror title. The most recent trailer for the game painted quite a positive picture for this game and we honestly cannot wait for it to be in our consoles/pc’s later this year. We’re not oblivious to the fact that the emotional impact felt from the trailer may not carry itself over to the entirety of the game, but still, that doesn’t stop us from expecting one hell of a survival-horror experience. So without further delay, here’s what we want in Dead Island.

BKstunt:

First of all, the damage system that was displayed is indeed impressive, but will it affect the game play at all? We’d like to see it integrated in that way. For example, we know that you’ll be using melee weapons on zombies, but what if you come across a zombie who has obviously already taken some abuse? It would be great if those zombies were easier to kill and didn’t take as many hits to take care of!

Also, a lot of comparison has been made between Dead Island and other games that feature melee attacks and zombies (such as Dead Rising and Left 4 Dead 2). In regards to that last game (Left 4 Dead 2), the melee system just doesn’t have any “oomph!” behind it. In other words, it just doesn’t feel… very real or satisfying. We’d like to see Dead Island have a more satisfying feeling when it comes to zombie melee combat.

Sometimes it’s not all about painting the town red.  Left 4 Dead taught us that if you can’t work as a team, you’re toast.  And toast, unlike Tofu, doesn’t make it very far; teamwork is key.  We know, sometimes survival-horror is all about being by yourself, but this isn’t some mansion in the middle of a forest, or the dark corridors of a space shuttle.  But Dead Island looks to have a lot of inhabitants, and not everybody is just going to die without a fight.  Besides, with few exceptions, if a game doesn’t have some kind of multiplayer component, it’s doomed.

Unfortunately, with many team-based affairs there comes that one special person that screws everything up for the rest of the group.  You know the guy (or gal) that forges his own path, leaves the rest of you behind to fend for yourself yet almost always gets swamped?  Or the person that just sucks and has been left behind?     The ‘hide’ system has you covered.  Remember in Resident Evil: Outbreak, hiding under the bed, or in a locker?  If Dead Island is going for a more serious tone they teased in the trailer, they’d include the very real aspect of being overwhelmed.  And there’s got to be like…a couple dozen closets in that hotel alone.

An open-world zombie game sounds pretty awesome.  While I feel the whole zombie thing is overdone as of late, I think if this is done correctly it could be amazing.  What I would like to see is the constant fear of being attacked…I don’t mean getting bumrushed 24/7, i mean bring a horror aspect to it…You don’t know where the attack will come from.

Bring back some old George Romero Night of the Living Dead – let us be able to make fortresses in abandoned houses.  I want to be able to make a stand if I want to, occasionally leaving for supplies…boarding up the windows and doors.  It would be fun if it was a constant struggle, not just a questing adventure with an ending.

While I’m not a big fan of online games, seeing Dead Island’s trailer really aroused my inner gaming senses. An online zombie co-op game? Sounds good to me! I could already imagine all these amazing possibilities. What I’m looking for is the feeling of panic and blood pumping out of my system while trying my best to fend off hordes of zombies. Seeing how the trailer captured an emotion to us viewers, the game could potentially offer us a strong single player campaign and I would love to see this happen. I’m also looking forward to the horror aspect of the game, how would the game give us the feeling of horror considering it is a team-based game? Is there gonna be an option for single player campaign? Will the score live up to fantastic music on the trailer?  Those are  the kind of questions running in my head after seeing the entirety of the trailer. Dear Dead Island, I hope you don’t disappoint me, love chewie.

I may be expecting a bit too much, but I do want a bit more seriousness in this title as opposed to say Dead Rising which is another zombie title that shares similarites with this upcoming title, what with the melee focus and all. The trailer did a good job of setting a tone that hasn’t really been seen in horror games as of late, but will that same feeling carry over while playing through the actual game? Previews have already been coming out and they claim that the game has a whole bunch of whacky, but totally awesome weapons, and that it doesn’t really have that same feeling the trailer presented. That’s cool and all, but in the end gamers will probably see that one trailer as “getting our hopes up” a bit too much. It’s like movie trailers, a trailer can make an upcoming film seem like one hell of a masterpiece, but then you end up dissappointed by the final product.  I guess what I simply want in Dead Island is a serious tone that will differentiate it from being merely just Dead Rising with a Left 4 Dead stye co-op focus.

Now it’s for what you guys want in the upcoming horror title. Do you share similar desires for Dead Island? Or do you have something unique that you would love to see in the game? Make sure to leave your comments below!
