The Horror Games of E3 2011: Alice: Madness Returns

Now it’s time to zone in on Alice: Madness returns, which hits retailers in a few weeks. So, being out so soon, should we even expect to see a lot from the game at E3 2011 next week? Perhaps we’ll get a final launch trailer and one last sneak peak at the gameplay. But regardless, it won’t change the fact that the game is easily one of our most anticipated of the year.

Alice: Madness Returns is the sequel to American McGee’s Alice, which was originally released on the PC and Mac 11 years ago. American McGee is back at the helm along with developer Spicy Horse to deliver this multiplatform sequel, and thus to send us back down the rabbit role of madness along with the insanely beautiful Alice.

For those of you who missed out on the original game, fear not. EA will be packing in a code in each new copy of Madness Returns that grants owners a free downloadable copy of its predecessor. And also, if you haven’t already, it would be wise to check out the just-released interactive storybook that’s available on the app store. Not only does it fill in some of the gap in between the two games, but it also gives you a discount code upon completing it which you can redeem when you purchase your copy of the sequel from EA’s online store.

So, what exactly are we expecting to see from this game at E3? Well, as aforementioned, there may not be that much in regards to this game. Sure there’s going to be a playable demo and perhaps even a full-blown launch trailer, but with the game releasing so close after E3 concludes, EA might not want to show anymore from the game for the sake of keeping things fresh once gamers have it in their hands come June 14th.

Now, you may picture the game as being a mere imitation of God of War, except with a female protagonist, but you would be completely wrong to do so. First off, the original Alice was release well before David Jaffe released God of Way in the first place, so such a claim would be absurd. And really, form what we’ve seen so far, Madness Returns looks to offer crazy gameplay which greatly complements the disturbing, insane world Spicy Horse has crafted. I said this before and I’ll say it again. The developer’s inspiration from Zelda seems pretty evident to me in the combat of the game, albeit being more mature in delivery. When all is said and done, Alice could end up standing among the ranks of Kratos and Dante, so, they better make room for her before she goes into Hysteria mode.
