Scream 4

In 1996 “Scream” hit theaters as a new slasher that would bring about a new attitude of teen movies with witty writing, a star-studded cast and characters that fans identified with.  While the first film stuck to the horror aspect it did have some clever writing and kept the audience involved with some humor and light-hearted moments.  It was a blend of horror and humor that many slasher films geared towards the teen demographic attempt.  With two sequels in the following few years, “Scream” became an icon of the ‘90’s and kept its fan base throughout its 4 year stint.  While the second and third films brought back more of the humor than actual horror, it still felt fun and fresh and definitely appealed to the target audience.

On April 15th2011, however, what we once thought was a concluded series is coming back for another go with the same cast that made it so successful the first three times around.  Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette are back to lead “Scream 4” to big box office sales, but will this outing be as successful as the first few?  As seen with any horror franchise from “Friday the 13th” to “Nightmare on Elm Street” to “Halloween,” each progressing sequel means less horror and more comedy and as stated earlier the second and third ‘Scream’ movies are no exception.  One thing that the ‘Scream’ franchise holds above some of the others is that it started out with humor and with that allowed some leeway in terms of content for the sequels it produced, which most other horror films do not and thus dig their own grave.  If “Scream 4” focuses more on an evenly balanced horror/humor story, then it is sure to fit well in the franchise and sell a lot of tickets.
