Fan-Made Horror #3- Compositions & Remixes (Music)

In the third installment of fan-made horror, we’re focusing on the music of horror games and how much they’ve inspired some musicians. In fact, they’ve inspired some musicians so much they’ve made remixes or their own takes on songs from various horror games. Sound has always been an important factor, I would even go as far to say that survival-horror is possibly the genre where sound plays the biggest role outside of rhythm music games. I will honestly admit here and now it is not rare to find music from horror games playing in my home. Besides confirming I’m a complete dork, the atmosphere and elegance they create tell a story and mood all of their own. Many games suffer from having music that only works in context and often you won’t enjoy a song until you’ve heard it in game and then come to love it. Not so with horror music, if you have the taste for it. Horror music captures emotion and mood that is able to print a visual image in the mind even without context, the music often paints it’s own picture.

So what picture has it left with musicians who have been interested on doing their own takes on horror game music? Quite a variation I will say. There are hundreds, possibly thousands of remixes out there of music from every form of horror game out there. These are a select few, but there are many more out there to find if your ears crave it. These are the remixes of the musically devoted horror game fans.

Firstly, we have a whopping 104 music tracks, distributed in 5 free-to-download albums, from Christophe Frutuoso, who with his love for Silent Hill composed the five fan albums, Endless Delusions, Ashes of Bitterness, Letters From Condemned Worlds, The Art Of Dying, and Essentia. All of these are original tracks though they are directly inspired by Silent Hill. You can download them all for free BY CLICKING HERE.

Speaking of Silent Hill, it’s unique sounds have inspired some interesting remixes as well. Take the following all as example.

Of course there’s more out there than Silent Hill remixes. Silent Hill has a unique audio style but the music that really came to define the genre and it’s music was Resident Evil. Resident Evil has lead to many wonderful and memorable songs over time, though the extent of the remixes haven’t reached the same number as Silent Hill, some songs like the Save Themes have had some wonderful renditions.

While there would be no way to cover all the remixes in one article (haven’t even touched Castlevania for example) here’s a few finishing remixes for various horror series to check out.

While the songs can be at varying qualities and tastes of music, they all share a passion for their basis. While there is no way we could ever list them all off or listen to every one for this, music is one of mankind’s greatest creations and something that no matter who you are you like some form of it. Everyone can relate to music in some way or another. Truly another area fans will continue to produce for with love for almost any series with some good tunes.
