DailyVania: Who’s your favorite character in Harmony of Despair?

Castlevania: Harmony of Despair will soon be hitting PS3s through PSN. We don’t have an actual release date for the port thus far but we do know it’ll be hitting towards the end of summer. Having said that, most of you reading this may have already put in dozens of hours into the game’s original XBLA release. So, after all those lengthy grinds and item-hunting sessions, which character in Harmony of Despair proved to be the one you found yourself using the most? Make sure to leave behind your favorite picks in the comments section below and feel free to email me, at jbocanegra@relyonhorror.com, letting me know what you want to see in a future installment of DailyVania.

Let me first say that I didn’t end up purchasing every character DLC pack. Out of the released ones I only got Julius, Richter, and 8-bit Simon Belmont. Once the PSN port comes out, I’ll be actually getting all the ones I missed for completion’s sake. The game already had a great cast of vampire hunters without counting the DLC, though. So it was nice to see things get spiced up with characters like Julius with his 8-way whipping and grappling and Maria with all her animal-loving antics. Hell, playing as old-school Simon even proved to be a great time and he didn’t feel out of place as many initially thought he would.

You really had a good variety of characters to pick from in HD, with the majority of people using Alucard and Soma Cruz. For good reason too, since the latter’s soul-system is truly a joy to mess around with and the former was able to use so many weapons to tailor to your own preference. Shanoa and her glyphs also proved to be not only useful but intuitive as well. Players who selected her got the upper-hand in several levels where her grappling would make her reach areas before others. Jonathan and Charlotte also got a good representation in the game. Jonathan was a solid whip-wielder and truly crazy with his martial arts moves and Charlotte made grinding something wise to do, especially if you wanted to upgrade her spells all the way. The variety in this roster is quite evident and you can easily spend hours with one character and turn to another for a different experience.

But, my most-used, and downright favorite, character out of the game’s roster definitely has to be Richter Belmont. Sure in terms of the Belmonts in the game, Julius has a wider range of attack, but still, using Richter proved to be a blast and I made sure to get every last piece of Simon’s gear for him. I didn’t get to max out all of his sub-weapons,though. That’s something I’ll definitely be aiming to do in the PSN version.

My favorite sub-weapon to use with Richter was definitely the cross, especially when maxed all the way. I just really enjoyed playing through all of the game’s levels, including the DLC packs, with Richter and this may also be because I absolutely love Rondo of Blood. He’s one of my favorite Belmonts, period. So, yeah, I was whipping the holy hell out of Dracula and his minions with him in this game. What about you? Who’s your favorite character in the game?
