It was announced during the The Game Awards 2021 that Friday the 13th: The Game developer Gun Media and Sumo Digital are developing a multiplayer game based on the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie, which aims to be an “authentic gaming experience based on the groundbreaking 1974 film.”
A trailer for the game was released, showing off the title’s period setting and everyone’s favorite chainsaw-wielding maniac.
The TCM films have had a number of digital entries, most notably the controversial release of the Atari 2600 version. Leatherface has also been included as a playable character in games like Call of Duty: Warzone and Modern Warfare, Dead By Daylight and Mortal Kombat X. However, until now, we’ve yet to receive a modern standalone title (excluding the intriguing, but no longer available fan made game, Leatherface: Shadow of Massacre).
The game’s official site doesn’t have much info yet, but does list some of the game’s features:
Welcome to the Family
Gun set out to once again put players in control of some of the most notorious names in horror. This time around, we brought the whole family.
The Art of Authenticity
Authenticity is a vital part of what we do here at Gun. But that authenticity runs deeper than just Hero Art. For The Texas Chain Saw Massacre we didn’t just recreate locations and characters, we recreated a whole time and place in Texas.
Conceptual Sound
Crafting an updated and inspired game score based off the iconic sound design of the 1974 original film would be no simple task. Have a quick read on how Gun approached this and the haunted noise box that became a major part of the score.
Given Gun Media’s history and experience with realizing the iconic Friday the 13th series in game form, there’s a good chance that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Game with be an asymmetrical horror game that pits Leatherface against a band of survivors.
We’ll keep you up to date as soon as we learn more about this exciting new horror title! You can check out the official announcement trailer below.
