One of the key ingredients to the classic Resident Evil experience is definitely the ambiance and overall atmosphere. It’s something that’s gotten more “hollywood” along with the more action-heavy styles of Resident Evils 5 and 6. But with Resident Evil: Revelations 2, not only do we get a more traditional horror experience in terms of gameplay, but also in terms of music.
Sumthing Else Music Works has released the official soundtrack for Resident Evil: Revelations 2, and it contains over 3 hours of music spanning 95 tracks. People have been stating how the game’s visuals are indicative of its lower budget, but the audio here truly excels. A lot of the music is quite subtle, playing into the eerie and decrepit environments. More prominent musical pieces also leave their mark, with a certain, traditional boss fight track being one of the highlights in the score. Another part of the game towards the end also gets a wonderful track to go along with it, which makes its old-school feel even better (it’s a true trip down memory lane!).
Something that can be seen as a downside by some is that there are a couple of tracks that are in fact re-used from the first Revelations. Like the main menu theme and the track during the credits. But when the original Revelations’ score was already great to begin with, I can’t really see this as a negative. It helps make this feel like its own sub-series with its own identity that’s different from the main numbered entries.
