We’re sure that the legions of Alan Wake fans rejoiced when news broke that there would be an addition to the Alan Wake franchise. Remedy’s 360 exclusive was pitted against some heavy hitters last year in its release window – when sales of the game were rumoured to be a little lacking, those who did take a chance on the title were left wondering if we’d ever get a chance to return to Bright Falls.
Oskari Hakkinen, head of franchise development for Remedy, said in his official statement that this new entry to the franchise is neither DLC or a full-fledged Alan Wake 2. There were also several other clues.
We are really excited about this project, which a slice of our team has been working on for the last months. It is something that’ll definitely give more to the Wake fans out there, but just as importantly, this installment will also give an opportunity for players who aren’t familiar with the franchise to jump on board.
Now only a piece of the team has been working on it for the last few months. Sounds to us like either it’s a small project, or it’s something where a lot of the resources are already available. Like…code perhaps? Pre-existing set-pieces and visuals? Multiple platforms, a release date for this fall?
Taking a look at some of the other media statements that Remedy has made in the last few months, one can’t help but feel that this is finally the PC edition of Alan Wake that was previously canned. Statements made by Markus Maki and programmer Olli Tervo that canning development the PC Edition wasn’t their idea, and that the game was originally supposed to be a multi-platform title seem to push the notion a little further. The decision to go exclusively with the Xbox 360 was not due to technological reasons, either. This lends a little more credence to the possibility that this new project will be multi-platform.
The leak of the “Alan Wake 2” related project came from an animator’s personal profile that they helped with the in-game cinematics of an Alan Wake-related project. Remedy also seems pretty keen in letting us know that it’s definitely a game, not some written material, a live-action series or anything of the like.
Alan Wake: Mobile Edition? Alan Wake: The Re-Imagining? A mobile edition would definitely expand the user-base, with pretty much everyone and their mother owning an iPhone, iPod Touch or an Android device.
