Silent Hill: Shattered Memories writer / designer announces ‘Her Story’

Sam Barlow, writer and designer of Climax’s Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, has announced his new game, ‘Her Story‘.

As his first game as an indie developer after leaving Climax last year, Sam Barlow has opted to tell the tale of a woman being interrogated by police due to the disappearance of her husband. Told through live-action video files within a police database, ‘Her Story‘ is a non-linear narrative game that involves the player sifting through police recordings and interviews.

“The aesthetic is True Detective via Blair Witch,” said Barlow on the game’s Greenlight page. “I’m interested in showing that accessible technologies such as video offer a powerful way for indie games to showcase a performance. I am also putting the spotlight on the modern phenomena of the Youtube Jury, in which police forces distribute the footage of intimate suspect interviews for armchair detectives to dissect. You see it in cases such as those of Jodi Arias and Amanda Knox — cases where the suspects’ stories themselves get lost amongst the torrent of clichés and prejudices that the videos elicit.”

Her Story‘ is said to evoke themes from Barlow’s previous work such as Silent Hill: Shattered Memories‘ psychiatric interviews. All in all, the game seems rather unique and interesting from a storytelling point of view. I’m very curious to see how this game works out. Here’s hoping it gets Greenlit soon!
