Oh friends I NEED more.
During an interview with Dual Shockers, Pete Hines (Senior Vice President of Marketing at Bethesda) talked briefly about what the company has planned for the rest of this year (which includes E3). If we’re being honest, the only thing we really know about is the Nintendo Switch version of Wolfenstien 2: The New Colossus, while everything else is a pretty blank slate. There’s tons of rumors and whatnot of course, anything and everything from Elder Scrolls 6, Fallout 5, etc., and obviously there’s gonna have to be something to talk about at their E3 press event this year (while we here at Rely were pretty happy with the announcement of Evil Within 2 last year, most were left wanting more). All that said, Hines made use of some interesting wording when discussing the crunch time Bethesda has to work through on the way to E3:
I couldn’t give you any guesses as to what we’re going to announce and when those games will be out. But I will say, we have a lot of new stuff to talk about at E3. Whether or not folks realize it, this is the hell on Earth time for us with E3. We are in the midst of so much planning and work for all of that content but I’m really excited.
Hell on earth, you say? That feels oddly crow-bared into the sentence, at least in my opinion. Of course, the first thing that comes to mind when you say Hell and Bethesda in the same train of thought: DOOM. First of all, 2016’s DOOM reboot/sequel (it can serve as both, it’s up to you and how much you want to read into what the lore of the new game is saying) was a smash hit, with near perfect reviews across the board. There’s also an even bigger hint at DOOM making a comeback this year given that it is also DOOM‘s 25th anniversary (which feels weird, I feel like the series is way older than that, but apparently not). Oh, and finally, there’s the fact that “hell on earth” was a major aspect of the original DOOM II. Yeah, this seems deliberate and calculated to get our attention.
Fingers crossed, I just finished the 2016 game on PC and I’m practically going into withdrawal. I need to rip and tear again! We’ll keep you updated on whether or not Doomguy will be back any time soon.
