No collection of retro horror games would be complete without Phantasmagoria, one the most controversial horror game of the mid-nineties. The live-action cutscenes depicting graphic gore galore earned the game bans in three countries. Phantasmagoria was featured alongside early adult games DOOM and Grand Theft Auto in the U.S. Senate hearings on videogame and software ratings regulations. Now, modern PC players can experience the game that horrified middle class moms everywhere in the 1990’s.
Phantasmagoria and its sequel Phantasmagoria 2: A Puzzle of Flesh hit Steam yesterday. They are also available as part of a set on Humblebundle for $1.00, along with a host of other Sierra games. While it is a little too late to play it for the shock factor, it’s fun to pay respect to one of the games that paved the way for modern horror.
